Meaning to ‘flourish’ or ‘bloom’ in Amharic, I thought Lemlem an appropriate post, given the current styles and colours as we continue celebrating the beginning of spring – which was officially yesterday 20th March. Soon to be launched on Net-a-Porter, Lemlem’s coveted multi-purpose creations comprise a handcrafted collection of women’s and children’s clothing and accessories using natural handspun cotton in a gorgeous array of colours.

The products are then finished of by touches of intricate hand embroidery. Lemlem was founded in 2007 by Ethiopian supermodel and actress, Liya Kebede who, after discovering that the traditional weavers from her homeland were losing their livelihoods due to dwindling local demand for their services decided to do something about their plight.

Whilst providing much needed jobs, Lemlem works towards helping preserve ancient weaving traditions and serves to introduce the craft to a wider global audience. A craft dating back to the times of Queen Sheba, women traditionally did hand spinning and embroidery whilst men mainly did the hand weaving.
