Quazi Design combines cutting edge craft with design-driven aesthetics. The company, based in Swaziland is a social enterprise built on the principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability, and was started in 2009, by Doron a designer from the UK; and Flotsam, a local Swazi magazine distributor. Quazi Design creates personal and interior décor from recycling locally sourced 100% waste magazines, layering or rolling up the pages to give the designs a 3D effect, and once a year showcases their innovative paper fashion.

Handmade in their workshop, the organisation develops the designs in partnership with local artisans, and also offers product development internships to designers looking to learn about sustainable design. Quazi Design is perhaps best known for its striking jewellery collections, but also produces a small range of papier mache bowls, distinctive in their bright colours enhanced with a glossy finish, and contrasting hand-stitched designs.

Quazi Design began with one artisan creating a simple rolled paper bead earring, and has since expanded its operations. In 2011 the organisation opened a shop at the Ngwenya glass complex, and in 2012 moved to a large spacious workshop that allows the team to explore innovative ways of working with waste magazines. Here they create their product ranges which are stocked worldwide. Quazi Design is a member of the Ethical Fashion Forum’s Fellowship 500.
