Textiles: Skinny laMinx Afro-Scandi Style

As winter gives way to spring, the promise of warmer weather and daylight lasting well into the evening sees braai (barbeque) stands and patio furniture being given a good dusting as entertaining starts to move outdoors, calling for impromptu get-togethers and picnics in the park. As we wait for the brighter days, why not get ahead start with colourful and quirky table and kitchen linens from Skinny laMinx, that bring a refreshing touch of playfulness to meal times. Starting out as a hobby experimenting with screen printing, Skinny laMinx was launched in 2007 by illustrator and designer Heather Moore who works from her studio and a recently opened shopfront in CapeTown, South Africa. Based on her distinctive papercut illustrations Heather designs everything herself, paper cutting or hand drawing the designs that are then scanned into Illustrator to be perfected, before screen printing onto rolls of cotton-linen blend fabric to be turned into a range of products including; tea towels, cushions, aprons, napkins and upholstered 1950’s style sofas and chairs.

Named one of Etsy’s top ten stores, Skinny laMinx has gained an international following from customers drawn to the simplicity of the designs, which display a Scandinavian design aesthetic combined with inspiration drawn from her surroundings in the form of balancing teacups, clouds of birds, roaming herds based on a 2000-year-old cave drawing, chickens, Duikers and local flora such as the Protea. Heather’s delight in her work is evident, with random moments such as the opening of a packet of salad leading to a new fabric design featuring lettuce leaves.
