Nyungwe House Rwanda’s 5 Star Safari Lodge Perched on the Edge of a National Park
A few years back I introduced Nyungwe Forest Lodge a beautiful property in Rwanda located on a working tea estate that sits on the edge of a closed canopy rainforest, said to be one of the oldest in Africa. Well fast forward to present day and Nyungwe Forest Lodge has become Nyungwe House, part of the One&Only group of discerning luxury resorts and private homes. And as you can expect from One&Only properties Nyungwe House exudes a heightened sense of style and elegance that is in keeping with its surroundings and embracing the local culture.
Nyungwe House is made up of the main lodge house and 22 rooms within 5 wooden villas clustered among the trees, all offering spectacular views of the rainforest. An important part of the design was to incorporate Rwanda’s culture and heritage which is referenced throughout the tastefully appointed interior decor. In particular are the striking black and white murals accentuated with deep red, which are inspired by Imigongo art. A graphic art form dating back to the 19th century and said to have been created by a royal prince.
Nyungwe House has no menu, the food is inspired by seasonality overseen by Executive Chef Treasure Makwanise who brings a modern update to traditional Rwandan dishes like Agatogo, a traditional vegetable stew made using green plantains which Chef Treasure combines with fish or chicken. Ingredients are locally sourced including from the resort’s own 100 sq metre garden. And off-course tea from the estate, which guests can enjoy at a Rwandan tea ceremony in the tea lounge.
Nyungwe National Park is the ideal destination for nature lovers looking for a safari with a difference. Treks take you through the forest and a canopy walk suspended high in the treetops brings a spot of bird watching while taking in breathtaking views. And if all that trekking gets to be a bit much unwind at the One&Only Spa which offers unique holistic treatments.
One&Only Nyungwe House, a unique place for adventure seekers.
