Taya Maxey is a Seattle native who packed up her life and moved to Kigali, Rwanda three years ago; followed by a year of dividing her time between Rwanda and Ethiopia after moving to Addis Abba in 2010 and is now in the process of moving to Kenya. In Rwanda Taya has been working with individuals hardest hit by the genocide; designing and creating a range of stylish accessories including belts, bags and sandals that use locally sourced materials and the diverse skills and expertise drawn from indigenous cooperatives and artisans from across Rwanda. The contemporary styled belts showcased here were designed by Taya and handmade by a Rwandan women’s cooperative; in a partnership that sees the skills of blind women creating the crochet and deaf women sewing on the sequin embellishment.
