…it’s been ages since I last posted, have been dealing with one of those curveballs life likes to throw your way every now and then to keep you on your toes. It’s been a rough few weeks and I’m still working my way through… could so do with getting away from it all. An island in the middle of a warm ocean would be just the ticket. As a child places like Mauritius and the Seychelles were portrayed as the epitome of classic beach holidays, oozing luxury and glamour amidst white sandy beaches; places where you went to be taken care of and relax, harking back to a bygone era of a more leisurely pace of life.

A favourite destination for romance and relaxation alike, Mauritius is a multi-cultural paradise with so much on offer and for those in search of the new it can be easy to dismiss it as the place everyone flocks to, but as with other popular destinations if you take the time to look you will find the hidden gems; and one such place is One&Only’s Le Saint Géran. Opened in 1975 the resort was remodelled in 1999 and offers all you would expect from an idyllic resort holiday. Catering to both families and couples activities include: golf, a selection of water sports, a spa or if you can bear to tear yourself away from a gently swaying hammock strung between two coconut palms go visit the site of the Le Saint Géran shipwreck.

With views of the Indian Ocean the well-appointed suites are described as ‘handsome’ and all boast private terraces facing the ocean, a cove or opening onto a lush tropical garden. In keeping with luxury resort style Le Saint Géran also offers a two-bedroomed villa complete with a private swimming pool and its own separate entrance, and gives you all you need for a discreet luxury hideaway.

Two dining experiences from Michelin-starred chefs are amongst the culinary choices offering both local and international flavours. Known as the ‘land of rainbows, waterfalls and shooting stars’ the island’s culture has been shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, French, British and African influences. Experience a bit of the local culture firsthand by letting the rhythmic beat of the Ravane – a goatskin drum – guide you whilst learning to dance ‘the Sega’, Mauritius’ national music and dance, which originated from mainland Africa and is said to be the expression of the Mauritian way of life ‘Joy, Carefree, Lively’.
