Sculptural Wearable Art by Jewellery Designer Ami Doshi Shah
Raw, unconventional, sensual, and conversational are some of the words that come to mind when looking at Ami Doshi Shah’s jewellery pieces. Hailing from Kenya Ami Doshi Shah is the founder of I AM I, a jewellery and accessory brand that is inspired by tribal talismans and the symbolic role adornment plays in culture and self-expression.
During her childhood, Ami Doshi Shah lived in Oman, the US, and the UK places that have had an impact on her work. She studied at the Birmingham School of Jewellery and began her career in the UK, where her bold outsized design quickly earned her a reputation as an accessory designer to watch. Ami Doshi Shah has been awarded the prestigious Goldsmiths Award for Best Apprentice Designer UK & The African Designers for Tomorrow Award. In 2019 she was selected by the British Fashion Council to present at the London Fashion Week’s International Fashion Showcase for which she created a striking collection based around salt.
Moving back to Kenya, her home country Ami Doshi Shah established her label, and from her Nairobi studio creates handcrafted sculptural jewellery pieces using locally sourced materials. She favours semi-precious stones and also works with by-product materials from the Kenyan mining industry. Ami Doshi Shah likes to juxtapose raw with smooth, seen in designs featuring unpolished stones set into sleek metal frames.
As an artist and jewellery designer Ami Doshi Shah’s designs are wearable art pieces that blend her Kenyan roots with a global aesthetic.
