Exceptional Art and Design From Africa’s Finest Designers and Makers on Show in Paris

Art and design from some of Africa’s finest designers and makers are on show at the French auction house, Artcurial. Art Exception / Exceptions d’Afrique brings together 45 exceptional craft, design and artworks from 25 artists representing 15 African countries. Curated by Nelly Wandji Exceptions d’Afrique explores and celebrates the heritage and traditions of know-how through timeless materials translated into a contemporary avant-garde look.

I was part of the selection committee and alongside a panel of notable industry professionals, we spent some time going through 145 entries to chose the final works. After much deliberation, we managed to bring together a group of emerging and established names working across a range of disciplines from woodwork to embroidery, among them the South African ceramist Zizipho Poswa, the intricate lighting of Meftah House crafted in their Moroccan workshops, the entirely hand-embroidered paintings by Rwandan Christine Rwagatare, the watercolours of Bartholomew Toguo on a series of ceramic plates, and the textile universe of Ghizlane Sahli.

Exceptions d’Afrique runs from 12-14th June and will feature never-before-seen collectable artworks made especially for the exhibition. Artworks that honour a new generation of creators who are united in using the materials of their crafts to tell the creative and contemporary stories of a dynamic continent.

You can book here to attend in person, or view the live experience online.
