Describing her style as ‘Afro Vintage’ influenced by a ‘glut of indigenous cultures from across the globe’, Doreen Mashika is a luxury accessories label located at the heart of Stown Town, Zanzibar. Coming to fashion by way of a financial career in Swiss Luxury Goods Fund Management – which served to introduce her to fashion designers and the commercial side of the fashion business – Doreen Mashika brought these experiences with her upon returning home to Zanzibar and setting up her eponymous label. 

Although designing some fabulous jewellery and handbag ranges which can be viewed on her website, it is on her gorgeous shoes I am concentrating. From the JADissima collection comes a range of cute ballerinas and stylish pumps and sandals wrapped in Kitenge, that serve to complement a range of wardrobe styles. The Massai Connection upholds the simplistic hallmarks of Doreen’s style with leather and beads adding just the right amount of embellishment, allowing them to slip easily from day to night with the right styling. 

With an ethos of fairtrade and sustainable fashion, Doreen’s designs are intended to embrace nature. Doreen Mashika works with women’s groups in local villages to produce the collections, which are largely handcrafted and also sources local raw materials such as gemstones, locally grown cotton and utilises recycled glass and beads; and in the process often supporting small market vendors when purchasing the required materials.
