It appears Swoon Editions is having a thing for African inspired textiles this summer. First, there was Eva Sonaike followed a few weeks later by Julie Kouamo, both of whose limited-edition collaborations sold out by the way. And now the latest collaboration sees the evocative Delta Sola textile from London-based designer Banke Kuku paired with Swoon Editions Milly Chair, and the effect is just stunning.

Taken from Banke Kuku’s Delta collection, Delta Sola used here in a soft velvet fabric, is characterised by striking black and white swirls that mirror the effect of oil patterns upon the water. The Delta collection came about after a photographer showed Banke some images of the Niger Delta after an oil spill, and the impact this had not only on the Delta itself but also on the surrounding communities in Nigeria. Appalled by the devastation created, yet fascinated by the emerging patterns, Banke used the conflicting emotions to create a range of thought-provoking textiles. Banke Kuku is an award-winning textile designer who regularly references her Nigerian, and a wider West African, heritage in her textile designs. Her textiles are often commentaries on social issues that affect the African continent.

The collaboration is part of Swoon Edition’s Designer Editions feature, which pairs one of their luxury furniture designs with talented textile designers. A new Designer Editions collaboration is unveiled each week and is available in small quantities. There are only 12 of Banke Kuku’s Milly Chair collaboration available.
