The Steampunk aesthetic of science fiction with a dose of fantasy, and inspired by 19th-century Victorian industrial steam-powered machinery combined technology is proving an increasingly popular lifestyle culture, applied to everything from fashion to interiors. One such interior is that of Truth Coffee, a Cape Town-based café, coffee shop and dive bar whose fantastical interior transports you to the industrial workhouses of the Victorian era. Founded on an ethos of serving proper, fresh home-roasted coffee the team behind Truth Coffee sought a look and feel that would embody their philosophy, and collaborated with South African interior and furniture designer Haldane Martin to achieve their vision. The result was turning their three-storey ageing warehouse into a Steampunk themed interior.

Full of exposed metal pipes, leather, raw steel surfaces, glass, authentic vintage fixtures, and reclaimed timber and materials; and centred around a fully functioning vintage roaster, the Truth Coffee interior embodies the eccentricity of the Steampunk aesthetic. The theme is carried throughout the building from exposed copper pipes, Victorian tap levers, pull chains and floor tiles, spun brass basins, and brass shaving mirrors in the restrooms to vintage steel stools and old worn school desks placed on the sidewalk. And completing the effect specially designed Steampunk uniforms and hats are worn by the staff.

In addition to designing the interior Haldane Martin also designed the furniture from high-backed leather-clad banquettes and overstuffed chairs to steel profile cut tables. Encouraging customer engagement with the space Haldane also created café tabletops with cog teeth along the edges that allow customers to slot tables together to create larger ones as needed.
