There is a touch of sultry seductiveness about Zimbabwean designer, Farai Simoyi’s latest collection entitled Madame’s Rouge. Named one of Essence magazine’s ‘fashions next best designers’, the Autumn/Winter 2011 collection was defined by the drama of red and black in materials like plush luxurious velvet, slinky satin and sexy see-through chiffon panels; all highlighted by shimmering gold accessories. Although born in London to Zimbabwean parents, it was actually while growing up in Harare, Zimbabwe that Farai got her first taste of fashion and textiles; when at age five started making clothes for herself and her dolls using the off-cuts from her aunt’s lingerie shop.

Farai’s family left Zimbabwe settling in West Virginia, US where Farai eventually attended University to study fashion and design; pursuing her passion for fashion further during a summer spent studying in Milan, Italy. Now based in New York City, her eponymous brand is a representation of soft, steel and bohemian, a combination of all her experiences from the places she has been and is the mark of woman, warrior and wayward traveler.

With collections going back to 2008, Farai debuted her Spring/Summer 2011 collection at NYC fashion week held in September 2010, this marked her stepping out of the shadows and coming into her own as a designer of her own rising label.

…definitely a rising star to keep an eye on!
