Interiors: Nando’s Central Kitchen Brings Together the Best of South African Design

Nando’s Central Kitchen Revamp [South Africa]

South African restaurant chain Nando’s unveiled a revamped interior for their Central Kitchen office space in Johannesburg. As the place where the Nando’s story began Central Kitchen is the heart of Nando’s and for its update the company set out to create an interior that celebrates the best of South African design, and brought in design curator Tracy Lynch to co-ordinate the project.

The headquarters was a former sauce bottling plant comprising industrial style buildings, factories and warehouses and these needed a cohesive makeover to represent what the Nando’s brand has become, a global chain that stands firm in its local roots.

From beaded mirrors, to innovative basket lighting, handcrafted furniture to patterned furnishings Tracy brought together the work of over 50 South African designers, makers and artisans to create a stylishly eclectic space in keeping with Nando’s contemporary African aesthetic, with a touch of playfulness.

In featuring local design in its restaurants around the world Nando’s is helping to boost South Africa’s creative economy giving established and emerging designers a platform to showcase their work and introduce them to new audiences.
