Hicham Lahlou the Designer Championing Awareness of African design on the Global Stage

Moroccan designer Hicham Lahlou is one of the leading voices championing awareness of African design on the global stage. In a career spanning two decades, Hicham has become known for his multi-disciplinary design practice as an artist, product designer, interior architect, graphic designer and more for an international clientele of major brands that include leisure & hospitality, fashion, and retailers. Based in Morocco Hicham actively pioneers the development of Arab and African design the influences of which infuse his work with the cultural and identity references of these diverse cultures.

In recognition of his contribution to global design Hicham’s designs have been exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Vitra Design Museum, Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Victoria & Albert Museum which inducted his Le Narghilé Disco Pipe, created for the French international luxury brand Airdiem into the institution’s permanent collection of Islamic art. Giving a modern update to a traditional object the pipe was also included in Design Indaba’s Africa is Now exhibition.

Ever focused on the development of design in 2014 Hicham founded The Africa Design Award and Days. Launched during the New York Forum Africa the event brought together influential designers and experts from around the world and gave a platform to recognise and celebrate new and established designers from across the African continent.

In 2016 Hicham was awarded the Insignia of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic, given in recognition of his career and contribution to design. That same year he was appointed Community Liaison, and official representative in Morocco of the World Design Organization (ICSID)
