Step Into the Art-Filled Home of Nigerian Interior Designer Tola Akerele

HarpersBazaar magazine gives us a peek into the stylish home of Nigerian interior designer Tola Akerele. Light and airy courtesy of an open-plan design Tola’s home flows seamlessly from room to room. This was intentional as Tola wanted a welcoming space to entertain family and friends.

A keen art collector African art can be seen throughout the home, adorning the walls with vibrant colour that enliven the living spaces. Modern furniture pieces sit alongside locally sourced vintage pieces and those collected on her travels. Key furniture pieces include bespoke items designed by Tola and handcrafted in her IDesign workshop and draw inspiration from Nigeria’s traditional artistic heritage such as the intricately beaded Yoruba chairs used by royalty.

Tola is the founder of the interior design studio and workshop IDesign, and co-owner of Bogobiri House, a hotel in Lagos, founded by Chike Joseph Nwagbogu that is known for its African-themed design celebrating Nigerian and wider African art and design. She started both ventures having moved to Lagos from London after 16 years in investment banking.

The colourful theme continues with furnishings and interesting interior decor details. While patterns add contrast.

Built in the 1970s the house is still undergoing renovation to create a sanctuary that truly reflects the lives of those who call it home. The terrazzo floors are an original feature which Tola kept as they serve to keep the house cool in an often humid climate.
