In a departure from the colourful African print fabrics that usually define their collections, London-based fashion label Ohema Ohene’s recent geo Africa fashion design collection saw the adoption of a striking monochrome palette. Launched in July, the limited-edition capsule collection was produced in collaboration with textile company, Printex Ghana. Entitled OH! PRINTEX the collection celebrates Printex’s history of black and white prints through fun, wearable designs for both men and women.

Ohema Ohene was founded in 2008 by British-born designer, Abenaa Pokuaa and was one of the first contemporary African inspired fashion design labels to bring printed African print and textiles to the mainstream. A graduate of the London College of Fashion, Abenaa studied Fashion Design Technology and Surface Textiles, honing her skills in various sectors of the industry before launching out on her own. Reflecting her multicultural upbringing, Abenaa’s style blends quintessential British styling with West African textiles. Ohema Ohene creates contemporary collections for both men and women, hence the name of the brand. Ohema Ohene means King and Queen in Twi, the language of Abenaa’s Ghanaian heritage.

Abenaa works with textiles mainly sourced from Ghana; using the vivid colours, rich prints and traditional motifs to create designs that reflect African prestige with global sophistication. Drawing many influences from Ghana, Abenaa was keen to promote a ‘Made in Ghana’ label. In 2013 she set up her workshop in Accra where she employs and trains a local workforce to produce her clothing, footwear and  accessories collections.
