A Kiswahili word meaning paradise, ideal or idyllic place or state, ‘Peponi’ is the name given to a thoughtfully styled home, whose Kenyan owner’s wanted their living space to reflect this sentiment by creating a sanctuary from the bustling city. A three-story Victorian conversion, located in London’s Notting Hill, Peponi House pays homage to contemporary African culture and interior style, drawing on the owner’s layered cultural background, travels and memories. Completed in February 2015, Peponi House was designed by Studio [D] Tale, who was commissioned to create a ‘home from home’ experience. Founded by Safia Qureshi and Maxwell Mutanda, Studio [D] Tale, is a multidisciplinary design and architectural studio with bases in London, Cape Town, and Harare.

The studio set about reconfiguring the interior layout, opening up the space to allow for ample natural light. This included inserting large skylights into the existing butterfly ceiling to direct natural daylight into the top floor open plan living and kitchen space. Creating an indoor-outdoor bathing experience, a skylight was also installed above a rain shower in the wet room, located at the highest point of the house. Sustainability was an important issue for the owner, resulting in ethically sourced natural stone being used to save on carbon footprint, and natural wool used to insulate floors and walls, ideal for generating warmth on colder days. Water harvesting was introduced for irrigating tropical plants housed in a restful garden terrace, which features a mosaic of colourful hand made cement pigment tiles from North Africa.
