awrence is the creative force behind the African Woven Lamp Shade. She started her company, Modern Gesture, in 2012 while studying surface design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa. Candice designs lighting, homeware, and small stationery, using materials such as plywood offcuts, ceramics, and wood which she has a particular soft for. With each material Candice explores different production techniques and craft skills, describing the process as one where there is a constant conversation happening between the hand of the designer and the material being formed, as the time and care invested in the creation of each item is captured. In this way, each piece holds its own unique characteristics. Bringing to life the stories in the materials, the conversations being created extend to the user drawing you in to engage on a deeper, sensory level with the product.
I’ve always had a soft spot for wood. The material offers the unexpected, which is like a metaphor for life. We are constantly carving away and refining our lives, but we can only plan and carve so far.
